How to Measure Yourself at Home
Chest
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest. Keep it straight across your back. Don't pull it tight. One finger gap is the right fit.
Shoulder
Measure from the tip of one shoulder to the tip of the other, straight across the back. This one matters a lot. If the shoulder seam doesn't sit right, the whole shirt will look off.
Sleeve
Start from the center of the back of your neck, go across the shoulder and down to your wrist. Keep your arm relaxed at your side.
Collar / Neck
Measure around the base of your neck where the collar sits. Add about 1 to 1.5 cm for comfort. You should be able to fit one finger in between.
Waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, usually just above the belly button. For shirts, this helps check if the shirt will tuck comfortably.
Length
Measure from the center back of your neck down to where you want the shirt to end. Most men prefer just below the hip bone.
Quick Tip:
Always measure over your innerwear, not over a thick jacket or sweater. And measure at least twice to be sure. One wrong measurement is usually why shirts don't fit right.
Which Size Is Right for Your Body Type?
Two people with the same chest size can still need completely different shirts. Body shape matters just as much as the numbers. Here's a simple guide to help you pick the right size based on how you're built.
Slim and lean
Regular sizes feel too baggy around the chest and waist
Try one size smaller than your chest measurement suggests. Check the shoulder width first.
Athletic build
Chest fits but the shirt feels tight across the shoulders
Prioritize the shoulder measurement over the chest. A shirt that fits at the shoulder can be tailored at the waist.
Broad shoulders
Shirt looks pulled back or the collar gaps open
Go up one size and check the shoulder column in the size chart. Shoulder fit is the one thing you cannot fix with a tailor.
Broader waist
Chest size fits but the shirt pulls around the stomach area
Compare both your chest and waist measurement against the size chart. Go with whatever is larger between the two.
Tall and lean
The shirt length is too short and keeps coming out of the pants
Check the length column carefully. If you are above 6 feet, XXL often works better for length even if the chest is medium.
Short height
Sleeves are too long and the shirt looks oversized
Go for your actual chest size. Sleeves can be shortened by any local tailor quickly and cheaply.
How Exotica Style Sizes Compare to Standard India Sizes
Sizing in India is not the same across all brands. A Large at one brand can easily be a Medium or even an XL at another. This confuses a lot of people, and it's one of the main reasons returns happen.
At Exotica Style, we follow a consistent sizing standard. Here's how our sizes line up with general chest measurements so you know exactly what to order.
| Size | Chest (inches) | Standard India Size |
|---|---|---|
| S | 40 | S/M |
| M | 40 | M |
| L | 42.4 | L |
| XL | 44 | XL |
| XXL | 45 | XXL |
You will also notice that our S and M sizes have the same chest measurement (40 inches). The difference is in the shoulder width and the shirt length. Our M size has a slightly wider shoulder (17 inches vs 16 inches in S) and a slightly longer length. So if you are between S and M, go with shoulder width to decide.
If you have shopped from local markets or other Indian brands and you usually wear a particular size there, we recommend checking our chart one more time before ordering. Your Exotica size may not always match what you expect.
Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions we get asked the most. If your question is not here, just reach out to us on WhatsApp or email.
-
Go for the bigger size. A shirt that is slightly larger can always be adjusted by a tailor, and it will still look clean. A shirt that is too small cannot be fixed without ruining the look. If you are between M and L, go with L.
-
Shoulder width. This is the one measurement that tailors cannot easily fix. If the shoulder seam falls at the right place on your shoulder (not drooping down or pulling back), the shirt is going to fit well overall. Everything else can be taken in or let out.
-
Our shirts are pre-washed to reduce shrinkage. However, like most cotton fabric, they may shrink slightly (about 1 to 2%) if washed in very hot water. We recommend washing in cold or lukewarm water and air drying to keep the fit intact for longer.
-
Our shirts are designed with a modern regular fit. They are not skin tight but not boxy either. Most men find they sit well without needing alterations. If you prefer a slimmer look, you can size down by one and have the waist slightly taken in by a tailor.
-
Yes. We have a simple exchange process. Just make sure the shirt is unwashed, unused, and has the original tags on. Reach out to us at contact@exoticastyle.com or call us at +91 70570-87587 and we will guide you through the next steps.
-
This usually happens when the measurement was taken over thick clothing, or when only the chest was used to pick the size without checking shoulder or waist. We recommend measuring again with a cloth tape directly over your innerwear and comparing all columns in the size chart, not just chest.
-
This is a sleeve and shoulder issue, not a chest issue. When the shoulder seam is sitting too far inward or the armhole is cut too high, movement gets restricted. Next time, check the shoulder width measurement and go one size up if you are active or broad across the back.
-
This can happen because different shirt styles and fabrics behave differently. A cotton check shirt and a regular cotton shirt can feel completely different even in the same size. Always check the specific measurements in the size chart for each shirt, not just the size label.
-
This usually means the shirt length is too short for your body. Check the length column in our size chart. If you prefer to tuck your shirts, you generally need at least 2 to 3 extra inches of length beyond your trouser waistband.
-
Always go by the measurement that is hardest to adjust. Collar size is fixed once the shirt is made. If your collar measurement puts you in a larger size, go with that. A slightly roomier body can be managed, but a collar that does not close properly cannot.
-
Three things to check before ordering. First, match your shoulder measurement exactly. Second, read the product description for fit type (regular, slim, relaxed). Third, check if there are any customer photos or reviews mentioning fit. If you are still unsure, feel free to message us on WhatsApp at +91 70570-87587 and we will help you pick the right size.
What Style of Shirt Works Best for Your Body
Getting the size right is only half the job. The right shirt style can make a real difference in how you look and feel. Here are some honest tips based on different body shapes.
Slim and lean
Vertical stripes are your friend
Vertical or thin pinstripe patterns add a sense of width and volume. Avoid oversized checks. A well-fitted solid or subtle stripe shirt looks sharp.
Athletic or broad shoulders
Solid colors keep it clean
Bold checks can overpower an already strong frame. Solid or lightly textured shirts with a spread collar balance the shoulder width nicely.
Broader waist
Darker tones and structured patterns
Dark solid shirts or structured small check patterns work well. Avoid horizontal stripes and very light colors around the midsection. A shirt that sits right at the waist without pulling makes a big difference.
Tall and lean
Horizontal patterns and bold checks
Wider checks and horizontal patterns help add width to a tall frame. Bolder colors also work well. Just make sure the shirt length is long enough to tuck properly.
Shorter height
Keep patterns small and clean
Smaller prints and solid shirts help maintain visual height. Avoid very large bold checks as they can make the shirt look oversized. A proper fit at the shoulder is key for shorter men.
